Formula pricing on a quotation means amounts follow rules: a line total is usually quantity × unit price; the footer sums lines and may add discount, tax, or fees. The goal is one correct grand total whenever lines change.
Buyers often check the total first. If it disagrees with the lines, the quote is rejected. That is the worst class of error in Common quotation mistakes.
The minimum formula set
Line total: qty × unit price. With a discount column, compute the discounted line first, then roll up.
Subtotal: sum of line totals. Tax: apply your tax-inclusive or exclusive rule. Grand total: the single figure after discount, freight, or install fees.
Keep one payable / quoted total on the page. Never type over the total cell.
Why spreadsheet cell formulas break client-facing quotes
Excel can calculate, but client quotes often fail when copied sheets overwrite formulas, someone edits the total, or teammates keep divergent files. Keep spreadsheets for costing; send client documents with field-level math that buyers cannot silently change.

Custom manufacturing: qty × process price, plus material or option lines. Construction: quantity × unit rate per item, then tax on the summary. Export: sum line amounts, state Incoterms in notes, and lock the currency.
Formulas handle arithmetic; terms handle commercial conditions. Write both so buyers do not reverse-engineer fees you never stated.

Change any qty—does the total move? Does the tax note match the formula? Does the PDF or share page show the same total as the editor?
